What is a Typical Post Base

Asked by Anonymous on September 02, 2013

I am designing a timber frame porte cochere. How should I detail the post bases?

Answered by Doug Friant

We use all all kinds of post bases depending on the situation. Many factors are taken into account, such as bearing load, uplift, exposure to the weather, lateral loads, etc. One of our favorites is pictured below. It is simple and works very well. There is a galvanized steel plate for the post to sit on, a steel rod drilled at the center of the post to resist lateral movement, and a 3×3 plate washer mortised into the post to resist uplift. post-base-timber-concrete-rod-plate -hi-res
